State assessment results are far later this year than usual because of the transition between testing on common core standards and the new Missouri Learning Standards (MLS). Here’s the latest information on the results for different subjects:
English Language Arts and Mathematics: The state worked with teachers and others to determine the achievement level scores for each grade level. This process led to some controversy among educators and questions from the State Board of Education because data shows that fewer students are scoring at Advanced/Proficient than in previous years. The results were delayed but finally made available to districts the last week of November. Individual Student Reports for ELA and Math will be sent home with students the week of December 17. Science: The 2018 tests for 5th grade, 8th grade and Biology were field tests aligned to the new MLS. The district will not receive any information regarding student performance on these assessments. Government: The District has received 2018 results for the High School Government EOC. The 2019 Government test will be a field test and the district will not receive any performance data, although this test will meet the requirements for graduation. Purposes of State Assessment: The federal educational law (ESSA) requires that states administer statewide assessments. Missouri School Improvement Plan (MSIP) requires district accountability regarding student performance on state standards. These assessments are not as useful at the school and classroom level to hold students accountable or to communicate achievement with families. That is why, in addition to state assessments the Fort Osage School District uses a variety of locally administered assessments to guide instruction and monitor student progress. We will continue to work together to provide our students with a quality education that will prepare them for college and career. Comments are closed.
