The 2016-2017 school year is off to a terrific start! I would like to thank each district staff member who helps educate students every day. You do an amazing job and I sincerely appreciate you!
On the first day of school, the past two years, I've had the pleasure of traveling to each elementary school to take a picture with each kindergarten class. Later in the day the pictures are attached to a letter and delivered back to each teacher so they may be sent home to parents. The letter helps serve as a welcome for each child and family into the Fort Family. We understand the excitement and apprehension that both parents and students experience when children begin kindergarten and want to ensure everyone we are prepared to transition their child into this new world of learning. We look forward to the numerous accomplishments on the horizon for each student and thank each staff member for making this transition a success. I look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come. Pictured with Ms. Coe's class at Blue Hills Elementary
On August 24 I had the pleasure of delivering terrific news to High School English Teacher Lindsay Thompson. Lindsay has been selected as one of seven finalists for the Missouri State Teacher of the Year honor. Lindsay will travel to Jefferson City on Tuesday, August 30 to interview with a selection committee, comprised of teachers, business leaders and education organization leaders, who will choose the Missouri Teacher of the Year following interviews with each finalist. The winner and the finalists will be honored at a banquet on October 24 in Jefferson City. The new Missouri Teacher of the Year will serve as the state’s nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition. Congratulations Lindsay! The entire Fort Family is proud of you!
On August 23 our second master planning meeting was conducted with district patrons. Their input is very important to me and to our Board of Education and we appreciated them taking time out of their busy schedule to participate in this important process. We had two productive sessions and the feedback they provided will help us prepare a final plan.
The District and DLR will work to compile a Master Plan for the Board of Education. They will review and then approve that plan at the September or October Board meeting. Once the master plan is adopted we will make a decision on when to run a bond referendum in order to accomplish the prioritized facility needs outlined in the plan. A bond referendum could be on the ballots for voters as early as April 2017. As mentioned at Convocation the playground at the Early Childhood Center received some attention this summer. Recently, the soft play mats were installed which allows students to play more safely. A ribbon cutting was performed to signify its completion.
