In my career as an educational leader I have never had to think outside the box as much as the past few weeks. Our 'norm' as we have known it changed immediately with the COVID-19 school closure. Although we may not know the entire impact of COVID-19 for years to come, I know without question that I appreciate the amazing students and staff at Fort Osage more than ever. We have shown that in times of need we can overcome any challenge and still provide supports for students and each other. I know we will get through this challenging time.... Together...... Beyond instruction, schools provide many supports to students, including meals. During the school closure the Fort Osage food service department along with teacher volunteers have provided a sack lunch Monday through Friday at five sites. Thus far the team has provided nearly 7,000 meals. Words can't express the gratitude I feel for the service they are providing our students during this uncertain time. Job well done! Even though instruction looks different when students are home, it’s important to continue to keep them engaged in learning. I want to thank everyone who has been helping prepare and provide instructional materials for students during the closure. This task is a huge undertaking and there are many people who are making at home learning possible. Although we have been providing instructional resources electronically to students since the beginning of our closure, more specific instruction focused on priority standards will be provided to students beginning as early as next week. Job well done Fort! Due to COVID-19 the state legislature is currently not in session. While legislation that has a negative impact on public education can't be passed while they're not in session, neither can the state budget. The problem is that legislators have no idea how greatly or for how long COVID-19 will impact the economy, which makes passing a budget nearly impossible. Since Fort's budget relies heavily on state funding this is a major concern for planning our budget for next year. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and create our budget when more information is known.
