With over half of the legislative session behind us, the session ends on May 13. A few of the bills we are monitoring and concerned about are listed below. HB 1747 and SB 657- Both of these bills would allow school board members to be removed from office with a petition signed by a specific percentage of voters from the prior election and a recall election taking place. HB 1552- This bill seeks to give a greater percentage of public school funding to charter schools. HB 1804- This open enrollment bill passed the House and is now in the Senate. The bill allows students to transfer to other schools which causes concerns with funding, staffing and future planning. HB 1750- This bill allows community members to place topics on school board meeting agendas and to require a vote on the topics. There is no limit to the topics community members may request to place on a school board agenda. Additionally, there are also currently fifteen amendments that have been added to this bill.
