The midway point of the 2017 General Assembly is marked by the legislative spring break which began March 20. The legislators will return in session on March 27 for the remainder of the session, which adjourns on Friday, May 12.
There are several bills affecting education being monitored. An update on one of these bills is provided below. HB 634- This bill has been amended from its original form. It would allow charter school expansion in any school district that contains a single building that has a score of 60% or less for two of the previous three years on their annual performance report. Although Fort Osage does not have a failing school it would allow for charter school expansion in the state which would likely take money from all public schools. The bill also doesn’t require for the charter school to open in the same geographic area as the failing school as long as it’s in the same district. Since the charter school is not required to provide transportation this could be an issue for a student from the failing school to attend the charter school. Separately, once the charter school opens, the school would be able to accept students from any district in the state regardless of residence. HB 634 has passed the House and is now being heard in the Senate. Comments are closed.
